Laser Voice Transmitter

The kits below will allow you to transmit voice signals over a light beam. These electronic kits are suitable for novice to intermediate kit builders. Soldering required.

Helium-Neon Laser Audio Modulation Kit- This simple electronic kit includes parts and instructions for sending audio signals over a beam of light. It works with all helium-neon lasers and connects to the cathode side of the laser tube. Any helium-neon laser will do as long as you can splice into the negative (cathode) lead going to the laser tube. Audio is input through an isolated 8 ohm input.  This kit requires some electronic soldering.
Item #: AMK $9.75 (requires audio amplifier, i.e. old stereo, boom box, Walkman, etc.)
Item #: AMK2 $38.50 (includes microphone kit, does not require audio amplifier, requires 9V battery.)

Audio Light Receiver Kit- Use this light receiver to de-modulate a modulated laser signal. Talk to your friends across the street over a secure light channel. Make a “laser bounce” listener system. Even de-modulate light from non-laser sources such as the buzz of light reflected off of an insects wings or the buzz of a TV’s raster scan. Great science fair project! Includes all parts, P.C. board, and instructions.  Utilizes an adjustable gain op-amp circuit with a CdS photo-detector and on/off switch. Requires a 9V battery.
Item #: LR2  $28.50

Fiber Optic Voice Link Kit- This kit comes with two circuits- one is the transmitter, the other is the receiver..  On the transmitter circuit board there is an electret microphone that picks-up your voice which is amplified and used to modulate a red LED (light emitting diode). The receiver circuit uses a high sensitivity silicon photo-darlington transistor to pick up the modulated light signal which it then amplifies for the speaker. Includes 13.5 feet of 1mm jacketed PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) plastic fiber optic cable. The receiver can also be used with other light sources in the 400 to 1100nm range. Soldering is required. Instructions and circuit diagrams are included with this excellent educational kit. Requires two 9V batteries.
Item #: FOK2 $39.90
